Many spiritual leaders of today profess how important and beneficial mindfulness meditation can be for anyone going through a difficult time in their lives. Now Harvard has shown that positive changes in the brain’s gray matter (which serves to process information in the brain) has been found to be directly related to the practice of mindfulness meditation. The researchers stated that an average of 27 minutes per day practicing mindfulness exercises was all it took to stimulate a major increase in gray matter density in the hippocampus, the part of the brain associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection.
Reductions in stress were also correlated with decreased gray matter density in the amygdala (which is the anxiety and stress center of the brain). “None of these changes were seen in the control group, indicating that they had not resulted merely from the passage of time.”
