Being Kind or Right?

Many times humans don’t even realize the dilemma they are sometimes in. In difficult times or in the heat of an argument, or even when trying to help someone else through a difficult time, we face the decision to either show someone that we are right and they were wrong in doing something, or instead we can just be kind to someone and be there for them in the moment.

In my experience, it is a much better idea to be kind to others instead of showing that we are right and they are wrong. Although, if the individual is talking about something that is going to cause imminent harm, then you can politely inform them that their decision may be the wrong decision.

However, even within that there is no reason to say it in a way that shows the other person that you are right and they are wrong. Doing this wont help the situation at all. Helping show someone that their decision may be the wrong one and that it may cause them harm should come from a place of being kind and helpful. Don’t confuse telling someone about a wrong decision they may make with having to show them that you are right. In this sense there is no reason at all to show someone else that you are right, even if the other person may be wrong.

Proving to someone else that you are right and they are wrong only serves your EGO. Serving your own EGO is never a positive. For more information on the EGO please go read Eckhart Tolle’s “A New Earth” Chapter 3 about the EGO. Wayne Dyer always likes to say that when we serve the EGO we are quite literally Edging God Out (EGO). No matter what you like to refer to as God, whether its more religious or more spiritual in nature, when I think of this line the definition of God refers to a more kind, generous, and helpful energy within all of us. When we Edge this kind and helpful nature within us Out, then we set ourselves up for more stress and a less successful interaction with whomever you are talking to.

In general, a good rule of thumb is when we have the choice to be right or to be kind, always choose to be kind instead of right. This will be very helpful to those in the helping professions and to anyone who wants a better relationship with a loved one or friend.

Namaste.
